Tax code too high?

$

0
my tax code is 1390L and always has been for the last 3 years (since i changed jobs)
I am sure it should be 1250L,

is there some grey area where somwehow i have increased my tax code for work related expenses but i have NEVER been asked for receipts.

I am worried one day they might ask for lots of money back
(they have done this before TWICE,once when I received too much child tax credit and once when my old employer failed to change my tax code so ended up oweing alot).
I am still paying 1,000s back in child tax credits and becuase of the incorrect tax code.

i DONT want to ring them because i used to be a contractor many years ago and had a bad experience with them asking too many questions that caught me out always owing them more money somehow.

Travel insurance for reward flights

Hi

Does anyone know of any travel insurance policies which cover reward flights using Avios points through British Airways? I know you can pay to change your reward flights up to 24 hours in advance, but I am wondering if a travel insurance policy exists for on the day missed reward flights or flight changes. I've tried British Airways and several others already. No luck yet.

Is there anything I can do?

So for the past 24 months I was on a DMP with StepChange, I was paying the minimum I could pay my debt collectors. But it says on my credit account that all the way up until last month and 24 months ago some of my accounts have a big fat red dot with DF or DM on them. But I’ve been paying the minimum I could afford through StepChange. I even paid each debt extra upfront beforehand so that when StepChange took the money from my account when I got paid - to not miss a payment as I know this is a common thing with StepChange and debtors - they all want paying on different dates!

I’m so upset :( what can I do???

HMRC estimation of earnings 2019/20

I've just been looking at my HMRC account and see that they've estimated next year's earned income at £15,000 and savings interest at £453 which has resulted in a code of 1250L. But they know that I only earn about £100 per month so why have they estimated £15,000? I've now advised through Gateway that I'll only be earning about £1,000 in the year so presumably they'll amend my account, but just wondering where on earth they pluck these figures from?

Just to muddy the waters, I've recently withdrawn a pension lump sum under the small pots concession and am in the middle of reclaiming the 20% tax paid on the 75% which was taxed. I'm trying to claim the tax paid back but their estimation of income for this year is really messing things up as they still think that I'll have a total income of their estimation plus the pension lump sum whereas in reality the total will still come under £12,500.

Going back to the 2018/19 tax year, for some reason they reduced my tax code to 1139L rather than 1185L which (coincidentally?) is about the same reduction (£460) as they now estimate my taxable interest for 2019/20. No reasoning provided. It shouldn't make any difference in practice as I didn't earn sufficient to pay income tax anyway but just wondering why they would do this.

Finally, they still haven't paid back £20.80 overpaid income tax from prior years without any explanation as to the reason. All very befuddling...

Any advice or thoughts on this would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I've just lost my appeal at the tribunal for my ESA.

The letter o recived says I need to ask the tribunal for a Statement of Reasons and the Record of Proceedings before I can take it to the upper tribunal.

Hastings cancelled Ford car insurance / AXA to follow suit for Peugeot?

$

A bit complicated...please bear with me -

I was unaware that I needed to declare ALL car claims (which are all non-fault by the way...) to BOTH sets of insurers for BOTH my cars.

When I was with E-sure in November 2016, I had a non-fault write-off claim on a Peugeot car - which was paid out by the other party, and I then had the remainder of the Insurance for the year transferred by E-sure to my replacement (very similar) newer Peugeot car - for a very small increase. E-sure were great, by the way.

Around the same time as that accident (about 3 days before I think) I had JUST moved to "Hastings" for my other car (a Ford), and have been insuring it with them now for a couple of years - and had no claims with them - until a non-fault accident in January 2019

- and then again another non-fault accident happened to the Ford (1st May 2019).

Unfortunately right after that someone else just (10th May 2019) hit my newer Peugeot - now insured by "AXA" (as I left E-sure).

When I was quizzed by the "AXA" claims guy if I had any other accidents to declare, I wasn't sure if I should tell him about the two incidents involving the Ford, but did so.

He told me I should have declared both Ford car incidents to "AXA" when they happened - and while he would get the ball rolling on my brand new claim for the Peugeot non-fault accident, he would have to get AXA's "indemnity team" involved to take a decision on the validity of my policy.

He also told me I would need to inform "Hastings" of the Peugeot write-off in November 2016 - and the 10th May 2019 newer Peugeot claim I had just put in.

I followed his advice, and the girl at Hastings went away for a long time, and came back to tell me their under-writer "Advantage" were CANCELLING my Ford's insurance, and that none of their other under-writers would give me insurance either - not because of the 10th May 2019 Peugeot incident - but because of the earlier Peugeot incident of November 2016.

She said they will give me 7 days cover to find a new insurer.

They will also retain £45 as a Cancellation fee - and then the remaining pro-rata balance of £42.xx from my £178 annual premium will be refunded.

I am now concerned "AXA" might also follow suit.

The other issue is - for the January 2019 Ford accident - I noticed after Hastings sub-contracted the repairs procedure to "Auxillis", who then chose a local "approved garage" - my perfect rear Ford badge had been deliberately swapped for a manky one - and Auxillis agreed from the "before" and "after" photos it wasn't the same badge - and they had asked the approved repairer to get in touch with me...and of course no one has come back to me.

My question/s at the end of all this are -

A) I guess I am at fault for not realising I should have "cross-declared" to both insurers for all the 4 non-fault accidents to both cars (although in my defence TWO of those happened just this month!) - am I now going to have to declare "I have had insurance cancelled" on all my future attempts to get car insurance?

B) Will I NOT now be able to recover the £175 Excess that we paid for the non-fault (provable by our CCTV) Ford accident of January 2019? Perhaps I should ask Hastings about that...?

C) Should I use the naughty Ford badge swap issue to hold Hastings to ransom, for giving me an approved repairer who then effectively stole something from my car?

Sorry for the long post!

P.S. Having gone through MSE's forums prior to posting the above...Hastings seem to have been in quite a bit of trouble for cancelling customers' policies (although in my case I DID get an E-mail notification of this right after I was told of the cancellation on the phone...) - but is it worth batting things back to Hastings, to see if they can persuade the under-writers to reverse their cancellation decision?

*IMPORTANT ADDITION BELOW*

++++++++

IMPORTANT EDIT - just looked at my online portal for Hastings, and they've given *this* reason for the cancellation -

"We are unable to continue cover due to the reason CHANGE OF VEHICLE"

- are Hastings / Advantage deliberately being kind to me by giving that "reason"...? And is it something I should accept as a Gift Horse if future insurers ask me WHY I had my insurance cancelled by them..??

Hi

We have been trying to sell our house with no luck and though we've redecorated neutrally the housing market is still very flat.

We've started looking at renting our house out but can't believe how much the estate agents are charging 1/5 of the rent plus then adding in taxation costs .

We will cover house insurance and also British gas seem to do a comprehensive repair cover insurance .this will be at our expense.

However we aren't sure how to vet potential renters but also would like a guaranteed rental income..

Are there good online companies.I don't mind a fee but what justification is there at £170 a month for a letting agent.

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

PCN Paid in 2015 Now New Demand

Hi there,

My apologies if I am covering old ground but I have searched the forum and cannot find an equivalent thread.

In 2015 my daughter overstayed the limit in a free car-park and was duly sent a PCN which demanded £70.00, reduced to £35.00 for early payment. She promptly paid the £35.00, wrote it down to experience and forgot about the whole thing.

She has just received 2 letters – one from TPS and one from BW Legal claiming that the PCN is outstanding and demanding payment of £124.00. While she is certain that the original charge was paid, she cannot remember if it was paid over the phone or online, whether it was paid by debit or credit card and, if it was a credit card, which one. She doesn’t have any bank or credit card statements from almost 4 years ago and is not inclined to chase around the card providers to find proof that she should not need.

Is there any benefit in sending a full SAR to TPS as there is no debate on whether she overstayed or if the signage was unclear but rather the fact that the penalty charge has already been paid.

She is inclined to send the following email to BW Legal:

Dear Sirs,

As your client should be aware, the PCN to which you refer was paid in full at the time that it was received. Your letter is, therefore, either the result of incompetence or an attempt to obtain money by false pretenses. Kindly refer back to your client and send me a confirmation that your letter was raised in error and that neither you nor TPS have any claim on me.

If I do not receive this confirmation within 7 days I will take your letters to the Police so that they can investigate possible charges of fraud and extortion against you and your client.

I will, in the meantime, be forwarding this email and copies of your and your client’s letters to the FSA, SRA and my MP to ask whether you are fit to retain your registration as you have either failed in your professional duty to confirm the validity of your client’s claim or are guilty of an attempt to defraud.

Yours faithfully
XXXX

Is this sensible or is there a better way forward?

Help with break clause in fixed term contract

$

0
I’m after a little bit of advice regarding our fixed term contract.

The contract was a renewal after an intial 1 year period, and after the landlord refused for us to go onto an AST we went onto a 2-year fixed to limited potential renewal fees.

However after 18 months we are considering leaving early, I have just taken a look at our latest contract which I notice had a deed of variation included for a break clause and for tenanats.

Quote:

1. Break clause

1.1. The Landlord shall be entitled to serve upon the Tenant Statutory Notice of not less than two calendar months pursuant to Section 21 of the Housing Act 1988 to break this tenancy. Such Notice:

1.1.1. Shall be given to expire on the last day of a period of the Tenancy and be served in writing.

1.1.2. Shall be served in accordance with the Tenancy Terms and Conditions.

1.2. The Tenant shall be entitled to terminate this Tenancy by giving not less than one calendar months’ notice to break this tenancy provided that such Notice:

1.2.1. Will expire on the last day of a period of the Tenancy and shall be served in writing.

1.2.2. Shall be served in accordance with the Tenancy Terms and Conditions.

1.2.3. This clause replaces and or amends any relevant clauses within the Tenancy Terms and Conditions and in particular Part Four Clause 1.2.

1.3. The Tenant acknowledges that should a Notice of termination be issued, such Notice cannot be rescinded.

2. Joint Tenants/Sharers

2.1. The Tenants agree and understand that in entering into this Tenancy Agreement they commit themselves (and their guarantors – if applicable) to pay the Rent and abide by the terms set out in the Tenancy Agreement for the whole of the length of the Term of the Tenancy and potentially any continuation and that if they wish to leave early there is no obligation upon the Landlord to release them.

2.2. The Tenants who are taking this Tenancy jointly as sharers further understand that if at any time before the end of the Tenancy they decide that they want to leave the Property they will still remain liable until and unless the Landlord or the Landlord’s Agent has agreed the terms of a new Tenancy with the remaining Tenants.

2.3. In the event that, at the end of the Tenancy Term, the Tenants cannot agree as to whether to renew (with the Landlord’s agreement) or vacate the Property, all of the Tenants accept that they will, jointly as sharers, remain liable for all obligations and responsibilities under the terms of the Tenancy Agreement until and unless the Landlord or the Landlord’s Agent has agreed the terms of any new Tenancy or the Landlord is granted vacant possession.
Reading section 1 it seems that we have the rights to leave the property in the exact way as leaving and AST, with at least 1 months notice before the next payment date? However parts of section 2 appear to contradict this.

I was wondering if anyone has encountered these two conditions together?

Capital One card abroad?

Not that I am planning on using the card when abroad next week but I have it as an emergency in case my bank card is refused ( has happened ) but do I need to let C1 know I am going abroad, if so how? I can see nothing on their website. I have let my bank know that I will be abroad and that they should expect a payment request from the hotel but it would still not surprise me if they declined the payment!

EIS investment benefits

Hi, I never had to do a self assessment tax return, but I recently invested in some companies on Crowdcube that qualify for EIS tax relief.

I took a look at the form to request a self assessment and on the section where I should out why I need to do the self assessment, there seems to be nothing that applies to me. My question is whether I can do it just for the tax relief and whether it is worth the hassle (I only invested a total of £450 EIS qualifying investments).

Thanks.

Santander security check for Elderly parent

$

Dear All,

our mum is 83 and although living very independently an LPA being put in place is not appropriate at the moment. Following a brain operation 18 months ago she has become too trusting and nice!

Following a bank phone fraud where she lost a large amount of money we investigated alternatives to invoking the LPA.

A year ago Santander were prepared to put in place a measure where if she tried to transfer /withdraw etc more than say £500 then Santander would then ring an appointed sibling to check this is okay.

We now tried to put this in place but Santander say they no longer do this service.

Does anyone know if all banks now follow this rule? Or think of anything else, she is quite brand loyal and would take some persuasion to change anyway..

With thanks
Tom
